Lauren Jannette is a Visiting Assistant Professor of History at the University of Iowa. She earned her BA in International Affairs and French from Kalamazoo College (2012), MA in History and Literature from Columbia University (2014), MA in War, Media, and Society from the University of Kent (2015), and PhD in History from The George Washington University (2022). She previously held positions as a Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Kenyon College (2023-5) and as an Adjunct Professor at Cultural Experiences Abroad in Paris.
Her research focuses on France's cultural and material history during the interwar period (1919-1939). Her dissertation and subsequent publications examined motifs of women and veterans in French pacifist propaganda from the First World War to the outbreak of the Second World War, focusing on how fascist and communist ideologies shaped artistic motifs and production methods. Her next research project investigates how women’s labor in the French interwar haute couture industry shaped urban development. She plans to explore how communities of Italian, Spanish, and Eastern European immigrant women lived and moved around Paris, focusing on the expansion of public transportation lines, housing developments, the creation of community “third spaces” for leisure and family activities, and their interactions with French women and “true” Parisians. This new project sits at the intersection of material and cultural studies, urban studies, women and gender studies, and labor history. She is also an avid fan of digital history technologies and is constantly looking for ways to integrate them into her research and teaching practices.
