In this session, Sarah E. Bond (History) and Lauren Lessing (Stanley Museum of Art) delve into the use and abuse of ancient art in European and American history and museums. From the fasces on Lincoln’s chair within the Lincoln monument to the Discobolus coveted by Hitler, Greco-Roman art and architecture played a key part in the political messaging behind the construction of “western civilization” in the twentieth century and today. What can we learn from the ways that the ancient world has been reduced, reused, and recycled today?
